Learn to sail in New Zealand - a beautiful place with an amazing coastline to explore and abundant wildlife to experience.

The sailing courses I offer will take you through all the essential skills you need to a safe and confident skipper or crew member.

By the end of course you will know all you need to about how to sail:

Boat and crew safety

Courses can be held on your own boat or with the network of RYA accredited sailing course providers situated all over New Zealand.

Course Aim Format Requirements
RYA Start Yachting Basic knowledge of yachting. Reduces the time needed to complete the Competent Crew course. Two days. Steering a yacht, sail handling, ropework and safety onboard. None
RYA Competent Crew By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines on board. The minimum duration is 5 days, but it is commonly run over 3 weekends or 3 days plus a weekend. If you have previously completed the Start Yachting course, the Competent Crew course can be completed in 3 or 4 days. Basic seamanship and helmsmanship. None
RYA Day Skipper Practical Can skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day. 5 days duration. Pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. 5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours on board a sailing yacht. Basic navigation and helmsmanship. It is recommended that you attend the CBES Boatmaster shore based course before taking this practical course.
RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night 5 days duration. Passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations 15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours. Boat handling to the standard of the RYA Day Skipper Practical sail cruising course and navigation to the standard of the CBES Coastal Skipper shore based course.
MCA / RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence Commercially skipper a British flagged sailing vessel up to 24 metres. 8-12 hour exam plus preparatory tuition. Can be customised to you specific requirements. 50 days sea time; 5 days as skipper; 2500 miles; 5 passages over 60M, including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper. Practical Coastal Skipper Course recommended.
